Nakyaze's Story
Rescued From the Streets, Restored With Dignity
This is Nakyaze. When the Balanced Life Family team first met her in 2017, she had already survived two devastating decades on the streets. For twenty long years, she wandered from place to place, carrying her little boy, Kazungu, doing whatever she possibly could just to keep him alive.
A Heartbreaking Daily Reality
Her daily routine was a heartbreaking fight for survival. She and her young son would move from one funeral gathering to another, simply hoping to find leftover food. For years, scavenging was how she fed her child. It was their only source of hope.
Behind her visible struggle for food and shelter was a much deeper, silent battle. Nakyaze was living with severe, untreated mental health challenges. She had no family support network, no home, and absolutely no stability. Yet, even through the intense fog of her confusion and trauma, she clung to her son with a fierce, unwavering love.
Tragically, the streets are unforgiving. When Kazungu was just two years old, he was senselessly attacked by strangers. The assault left his ankle severely damaged, leaving him unable to walk properly. For years, he carried this painful injury while living in the trenches with his mother.
"Behind every person on the streets is a life worth saving."
The Rescue and Medical Intervention
Everything began to change when the BLF family stepped in. We rescued Nakyaze and her little boy from the unforgiving streets, immediately renting her a safe room—a sanctuary where she could finally sleep without fear.
But Kazungu needed urgent medical attention. Our team on the ground, including Mathew, took him to a specialized children's hospital to finally treat the severe ankle damage he had suffered years prior. Thanks to the support of the BLF Partners Circle, his medical bills were fully covered, beginning his journey to physical healing.
Understanding the critical need to break the cycle of poverty, BLF also stepped in to oversee the care of her son. We ensured Kazungu had consistent food, proper clothing, and the educational stability that every child inherently deserves.
A Future Reclaimed
Today, the transformation is miraculous. Kazungu is now in Primary Six. He has grown into a bright, confident boy, surrounded by love, structure, and opportunity. His vibrant life is a living testimony of what happens when a child is lifted out of mere survival mode and finally given a chance to thrive.
And Nakyaze? She is no longer wandering. She continues to receive the dedicated support, care, and dignity she deserves. Her story is a powerful reminder of why we do this work: because behind every person on the streets is a life worth saving, a family worth restoring, and a future worth fighting for.
